John Oxley Bicentenary Celebration

The John Oxley Bicentenary Celebrations are Proudly brought to you by Harrington Lions Club, Harrington Crowdy Head Chamber of Commerce and Harrington Evening VIEW Club. To mark the bicentenary of Oxley’s arrival here and crossing of the ‘lake’ there are a number of not to be missed events happening over 3 days.

Saturday 20th October.

8.00am – FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
Pilot Hill – High St, Harrington
ON Saturday morning, spectators can gather on Pilot Hill before 8am to see the pipe bands and cadets from the army and air force march to the flagstaff. The town crier will call the gathering to order and the Lions members will raise the flags.

9.30am – STREET PARADE
The street parade will commence at the  Harrington Crowdy Marine Rescue base and travelling along Beach Street to the John Oxley Memorial (alongside Club Harrington). Featuring in the parade will be a town crier, a mount police trooper in period dress, members of the Light Horse Brigade, pipe and drum bands, floats, school children, old cars and motorbikes, community organisations and services.

* Beach Street will be closed to traffic while the parade is taking place and detours will be in place.

11.00am  – DEDICATION CEREMONY
John Oxley Memorial – Beach St, Harrington.
Unveiling two new information boards detailing the John Oxley Exploration Journey. 

11.30am – ENACTMENT  
John Oxley Memorial – Beach St, Harrington.
Harrington Public School Students will present an enactment of the Oxley expedition’s river crossing. 

12.00pm – LIONS BARBECUE LUNCH
John Oxley Memorial –  Beach St, Harrington.
Parade participants and spectators can refuel at the Lions BBQ and for stalls. On display will also be the cars and bikes from the parade.
